This product is a little bit different from your common hot plate hair straightener, it has high pressure, cool steam that penetrates the hair shat to create a smooth and shiny finish. You can use this on dry or damp hair. The time is takes the product to heat up is not very long. I really like that it has a automatic shut off function, because sometimes when you are in a rush or moving all over the place you may forget to turn off this product. The 360 degree swivel cord is perfect for maneuvering and keeping the cord and my hair tangle free. The product has five temperature settings,so please be cautious and know your hairs heat limits. The steam portion works great and the shine I get afterwards is amazing. Great product and glad this was my choice.
